WotLK smite priest glyphs

What glyphs does a smite priest use?
Most of the time, selecting glyphs is like walking into a candy store with a five dollar bill. You only get to pick out certain candies to put into your one pound bag, and picking and choosing is based upon a) your favorites, and b) the weight of the candy.
The Holy healing priest–or the discipline healing priest–are going to have a wide array to pick from, with only three major glyphs to fill. They’ll make a list of upwards to a dozen different selections and pick based upon the weight of the glyph–how useful it is, what the community thinks are the “staples” and the “up to you” selections–and also based upon which spells they most prefer to cast. Why would you ever glyph for Prayer of Healing if it isn’t your cup of tea?
But the smite priest is the man in a candy store that just got ransacked the day before Halloween. There really isn’t a lot of options, and you start to scrape at the seams of the glyph-shelves just looking for something to use.
Here are two glyphs your Wrath of the Lich King smite priest cannot do without:
- Glyph of Smite (and Ghostcrawler said it’s not a real spec! >.>)
- Glyph of Holy Nova (which previously was awful)
That first glyph is going to beef up your Smite spell whenever your Holy Fire is on its tick. One of the ways to most utilize this is by getting yourself around-abouts 20% haste so that you can ninja in an additional Smite before the tick wears off. The glyph will also force you to keep Holy Fire active.
But why Holy Nova? Beyond the fact it’s going to turn you into a mean, lean, grinding/solo instance machine, Holy Nova also serves in a pinch for getting yourself extra Surge of Light procs. You also just became a candidate for the “AoE classes” on those raid bosses where you need to pwnzor the adds like Onyxia.
Your third glyph is open for interpretation. Here’s a couple suggestions I have:
- Glyph of Power Word: Shield. Johannah uses the Glyph of Power Word: Shield for her third glyph slot, simply because it’s part of the rotation anyways to get the 3% reduction to damage for the raid. (See: Lvl 80 Smite Priest Guide for this spec type.)
- Glyph of Pain Suppression: Excellent choice for the PvP smiter.
- Glyph of Dispel Magic: Are the dispel colors on your Healbot driving you nuts? If you find yourself playing the backup Dispel Magic role, do yourself a favor and give your Dispel Magic that extra bling.
- Glyph of Fear Ward: If you don’t mind swapping glyphs out for certain bosses, your raid will love you for giving yourself a faster Fear Ward in the absence of a Tremor Totem.
- Glyph of Renew: if you are commonly playing a “half healer” role for raids that can’t do a boss with only two healers but don’t really need three healers, beefing your Renew could be a substantial benefit.
Minor glyphs are all flavor. I personally like Glyph of Fortitude, Glyph of Levitate, and Glyph of Shadow Protection.
